Chapter Six – David

His eyes snapped open. Emily shook his shoulder, and he grabbed her on the arm to desist. “Emily, what’s wrong?”

“I’m sorry, but there’s a bear in your garden.”

He yawned, clambering out of his bed. “A bear?”

“It’s destroying everything you’ve placed out there.”

He cursed, the sleepiness banishing itself from his brain. He didn’t bother getting dressed, pouncing to the front door in just his boxers, while Emily followed, bewildered and concerned. “Stay behind, Emily. It’s dangerous out there.” He burst open the door and slammed his hands into the snow, taking in the bear crunching through his hard-placed decorations. The transformation took over him, bulging out his muscles, growing thick, coarse fur. His jaw cracked and elongated into the deadly bear snout, and his claws burst out of his nails.

The enemy bear instantly got onto his hind legs, letting out a challenging growl. David echoed the growl, rearing onto his own legs. Both were about the same height.

What do you think you’re doing here? he growled at the bear. It wasn’t wild. The intelligence and manner in which it stood told him that much.

You know why I’m here, the bear responded in a deep, familiar masculine voice.

Horace Woode. Rage filled David’s whole being. The bear responsible for scheming with his ex. The one who had married her instead. You play a dangerous game!

I can smell you have someone with you, Horace sneered, bracing himself for impact. A human. I bet it will be easy to bribe them. How much do you think it will take? Ten thousand? Twenty? And I bet she’ll be singing our tune, rather than yours.

Haven’t you had enough of this harassment? What is the point?

It’s fun. Horace’s response made David want to launch himself at the bastard. But you know, your people shouldn’t have stolen that land from us. It was meant to be ours. We planned to pay for it, right before your father slithered in and snatched it from under our noses. He’s the one playing the dangerous game, if you ask me. Horace slashed his claws through some of the light-up snowdrops, breaking the glow within them. His gaze then slid to the door, and David realized too late that Emily was frozen at the entrance, wide-eyed as she regarded the scene.

He couldn’t speak human language at this point, so any effort to communicate with her might spook her further. He did the only thing he could think of—block Horace’s view, and edge towards him, ready to strike. Ready to kill. If Emily hadn’t alerted him to this disturbance, who knew how much more damage Horace intended to wreak? He growled, the sound taking on a vicious edge.

Horace backed away fast, breaking his fence in the process. The bear scurried into the darkness, leaving David with his broken garden, and a sinking sense of despair that he couldn’t quite shake off. He would’ve woken up in the morning to see everything ruined. Now he witnessed the person behind it, and potentially exposed Emily to more danger than she deserved to suffer.
